LOS ANGELES, Sept. 16 (UPI) — Pitcher Ross Ohlendorf put Pittsburgh in front with his first major league homer Thursday, sending the Pirates to a 6-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Pirates had runners on first and second with two away in the second when Brandon Wood delivered an RBI single that tied it at 1-1.

That brought up Ohlendorf for his 101st career at-bat in a five-year career with the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh. He drove the first pitch from Dana Eveland over the wall in right for a three-run shot that gave the Pirates the lead for good.

Ohlendorf (1-2) won his first game since July 10, 2010, allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings.

Eveland (2-1) gave up four runs on eight hits in taking the loss.

Evan Meek started the ninth for the Pirates, but loaded the bases with two away. Joel Hanrahan then came on to collect his 38th save by getting Aaron Miles on a fly ball to left.

The loss eliminated the Dodgers from the National League West pennant race.

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 10 (UPI) — Ryan Howard bashed a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning Wednesday, rallying the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-8 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Trailing 6-0 after three innings, the Phillies had cut their deficit to 7-5 heading into the sixth and then stunned the Dodgers with four runs to grab control of the contest.

With runners at the corners and two outs, Chase Utley stroked an RBI single off Blake Hawksworth (2-3), shaving LA’s lead to one run, and Howard followed by slicing a 2-1 pitch into the left field stands for an opposite-field homer, scoring Utley ahead of him.

Hunter Pence hit a two-run shot and Utley finished with two RBI as the National League Eastern Division-leading Phillies swept a three-game series in Los Angeles for the first time since 1995.

Kyle Kendrick (7-5) earned the victory, and Ryan Madson picked up his 22nd save despite allowing a run on two hits in the ninth.

Juan Rivera hit a three-run home run and finished with four RBI. Matt Kemp went 4-for-5 with an RBI single for the Dodgers.

Not much else going on in the MLB planet today.

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 10 (UPI) — Cliff Lee tossed eight shutout innings and smacked a home run Tuesday, boosting the Philadelphia Phillies to a 2-1 decision over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Lee (12-7), who was coming off a seven-hit shutout of San Francisco in his previous start, scattered four hits, issued a pair of walks and struck out 10 batters.

He was working with a 1-0 lead for much of the game when he launched a home run into the right field stands in the seventh, which turned out to be the winning run.

Ryan Madson earned his 21st save despite allowing an RBI single to Casey Blake in the ninth.

The Dodgers’ Ted Lilly (7-12) was saddled with the hard-luck loss, surrendering two runs on six hits over eight frames.
