NEW YORK — Clayton Kershaw, Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier became the first trio of Los Angeles Dodgers to win National League Gold Gloves in the same year, while Adrian Gonzalez, Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury became the first three Boston Red Sox in 32 seasons to win the AL honor together. Kershaw became a first-time winner at pitcher when the awards were announced Tuesday. Ethier earned his first Gold Glove in the outfield and outfielder Kemp won the NL honor he also received in 2009. First baseman Gonzalez earned his first AL Gold Glove to go along with two he won in the NL while with San Diego, Pedroia won at second base for the first time since 2008 and center fielder Ellsbury picked up his first Gold Glove. | Dodgers’ Kemp, Jays’ Bautista win Aaron Award | |
Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Matt Kemp, who led the National League with 39 homers this season, won the NL Hank Aaron Award which recognizes the top offensive players in Major League Baseball. Toronto’s Jose Bautista was named the American League winner for the second consecutive year. The two were presented with their awards by Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig prior to game five of the World Series on Monday. The 27-year-old Kemp led the NL in home runs, runs scored (115) and total bases (353). He also batted .324 and had 126 RBI. Bautista, 31, led MLB with 43 homers and batted a career-best .302 for the Blue Jays. Bautista, of the Dominican Republic, is just the fifth player in MLB history to record at least 40 home runs, 130 walks, and nine steals in the same season. “I congratulate Jose Bautista and Matt Kemp on being this year’s recipients of the 2011 Hank Aaron Award, named for one of the true pillars of our game,” said Selig. “The best is yet to come for both of these young men. I look forward to watching Jose and Matt continue to emulate Hank’s example in the years ahead.” The Hank Aaron award is given annually and was established in 1999 to honour the 25th anniversary of Aaron breaking Babe Ruth’s all-time home run record. The winners are determined through voting by fans and a select panel of Hall of Fame players, including Aaron, Billy Williams and Joe Morgan. Previous winners include Manny Ramirez and Sammy Sosa in 1999, Barry Bonds and Ramirez in 2004 and Alex Rodriguez and Prince Fielder in 2007. Cardinals Albert Pujols won the award for the NL in 2009 and 2003. None of the former winners are included in the eight-member panel that picks the winners. What are your opinions.
