SAN DIEGO — The Los Angeles Dodgers placed catcher Hector Gimenez on the 15-day disabled list Sunday because of pain in his right knee.

The move clears a place on the active roster for right-hander John Ely, who was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to make what likely will be a one-time spot start against the San Diego Padres.

Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said Gimenez has been dealing with discomfort in his knee since late in spring training. Manager Don Mattingly said he and Colletti originally had planned to send catcher A.J. Ellis to Albuquerque to make room for Ely, but that they changed their minds after a report from assistant trainer Todd Tomczyk that the pain in Gimenez’s knee had gotten worse.

“I said, ‘Can he [play]?’ and [Tomczyk] said he didn’t know,” Mattingly said. “We are at a point with [18] more [games] left [without an off-day] where we can’t afford to have a backup catcher not be able to go.”

Ellis actually had been told he was going to the minors and was in the process of packing his equipment when Mattingly told him he was staying.

The Dodgers have been carrying three catchers all season partly because Gimenez is out of minor league options, a situation that could come to a head when backup catcher Dioner Navarro comes off the 15-day disabled list sometime in the next few weeks. Gimenez, a rookie, has one hit and three strikeouts in seven at-bats. He has started one game behind the plate and pinch hit in three others.

His previous major league experience consisted of two pinch-hitting appearances for the Houston Astros in 2006, and he spent all of 2007 on the Astros’ major league disabled list following surgery on the labrum in his right shoulder during spring training.

Ely was promoted to fill the fifth spot in the rotation, which the Dodgers haven’t needed to fill this season until now. But veteran Jon Garland (oblique strain) is scheduled to make a rehabilitation start on Sunday for advanced Single-A Rancho Cucamonga at Inland Empire and throw about 80 pitches. If that goes well, Garland will be activated from the DL in time to start on Friday night against the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium.

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Juan Uribe was sent for precautionary X-rays on his left elbow Friday after he experienced swelling as a result of being hit by a pitch from San Francisco Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum in the sixth inning of Thursday’s season opener.

Uribe played the rest of that game, but he was out of the lineup on Friday night against the Giants.

Stan Conte, the Dodgers’ director of medical services, stressed that the X-rays were strictly precautionary and that the pitch that hit Uribe struck muscle as opposed to bone. There was some hope Uribe would be available to pinch hit after returning from White Memorial Hospital, where the X-rays were taken.

“I’m going to go get it looked at now,” Uribe said as he changed back into his regular clothes before leaving Dodger Stadium.

Although the Dodgers already have five players on the 15-day disabled list, no one seemed especially concerned that Uribe could join them.

“I had him in the lineup, but he came in swollen,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. “Stan was actually really surprised. Hopefully, it’s just today.”

Uribe was replaced at third base by Aaron Miles.

The Dodgers set their 25-man opening day roster after tonight’s 8-1 win in their spring finale at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers will open with five players on the disabled list, with nearly all of them expected back at various points in April. The biggest surprise on the roster is probably Hector Gimenez, the 28-year old catcher who also saw time at first base and even left field this spring. Here is the full 25-man roster:

• Outfielders (5): Andre Ethier, Matt Kemp, Marcus Thames, Tony Gwynn Jr., Xavier Paul
• Disabled List (5): Casey Blake, Jon Garland, Vicente Padilla, Jay Gibbons, Dioner Navarro

The Dodgers had 39 players on their 40-man roster, but with the additions of non-roster invitees MacDougal, Cormier, and Miles, they needed to make two corresponding moves. The club designated John Lindsey and Jon Link for assignment to make room.

The Dodgers will need a fifth starter on April 10, so another move will need to be made to accommodate the pitcher, who will likely be Tim Redding, who will begin his season with the Triple A Albuquerque Isotopes.
