Blake had a $6 million option. The 38-year-old third baseman had arthritis

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 10 (UPI) — Cliff Lee tossed eight shutout innings and smacked a home run Tuesday, boosting the Philadelphia Phillies to a 2-1 decision over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Lee (12-7), who was coming off a seven-hit shutout of San Francisco in his previous start, scattered four hits, issued a pair of walks and struck out 10 batters.

The left-hander allowed only one runner to reach third and lowered his ERA to 2.83 for the first-place Phillies, who moved 36 games over .500 (76-40) for the first time in 34 years. He was working with a 1-0 lead for much of the game when he launched a home run into the right field stands in the seventh, which turned out to be the winning run.

Ryan Madson earned his 21st save despite allowing an RBI single to Casey Blake in the ninth.

The Dodgers’ Ted Lilly (7-12) was saddled with the hard-luck loss, surrendering two runs on six hits over eight frames.

SAN FRANCISCO — Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal has been placed on the 15-day disabled list after he broke his left thumb while sliding into third base on a steal during a 6-1 win over the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.

The Dodgers made the move Tuesday, when Furcal headed back to Los Angeles to be examined by a hand specialist. Los Angeles recalled rookie infielder Ivan De Jesus from Triple-A Albuquerque to fill Furcal’s roster spot. De Jesus went 0 for 7 with five strikeouts while starting the year with the Dodgers, then was optioned to the minors April 5 when third baseman Casey Blake came off the disabled list.

Furcal’s injury — on his non-throwing hand — wasn’t immediately known because he stayed in the game for two more innings until Aaron Miles pinch-hit for him in the seventh. He revealed that the thumb was broken after he had postgame X-rays.

“It’s bad. It’s broken,” Furcal, who had already been nursing a sore left wrist, said late Monday. “I knew as soon as the play happened. I got up and I didn’t feel it.”

Furcal, picked for his second All-Star team last season despite battling injuries, is hitting .192 with two RBI in seven games.

In 2010, he had 34 multihit outings while playing in only 97 games — including seven straight multihit games from June 26-July 3. He batted .300 for the third time in five seasons and Los Angeles went 31-17 when he scored at least one run and 13-2 when he scored two or more.

The 33-year-old has had his share of hard luck with injuries.

After a healthy 2009, he had two stints on the DL last year, with a strained left hamstring and a lower back strain. Furcal missed 125 games in 2008 with a lower-back injury and opened the ’07 season on the disabled list with a sprained left ankle.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

SAN FRANCISCO — Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Casey Blake, who already was on the 15-day disabled list earlier this season with a lower-back/rib-cage injury, was out of the lineup for the second game in a row on Monday night against the San Francisco Giants because of soreness in his left thigh.

Blake has had difficulty running since a game-ending collision with San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley, resulting in Headley being called out for interference as Blake tried to field a ball hit by Cameron Maybin with the bases loaded in which Blake had no chance to throw out the speedy Maybin at first.

Blake hasn’t played since.

“Casey was a little worse overnight,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. “He was having trouble running and going side to side. [Trainer] Stan [Conte] was a little concerned, I guess, that the area could pull up a little bit and keep him out for a long time. So I guess we’ll just go day to day from there.”

Mattingly said Blake, who is 4-for-11 in the three games he has played this season, is available to pinch hit.

SAN DIEGO, April 9 (UPI) — Four rain delays in San Diego caused Friday’s game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Padres to be suspended tied 2-2 after eight innings.

The teams are to complete the game Saturday before the regularly scheduled weekend contest.

Heavy rains led to play being stopped four times Friday for a total of three hours, 36 minutes.

The game is to resume in the top of the ninth with the Dodgers’ Matt Kemp on first with no outs. Juan Uribe is due to bat.

The Dodgers used five pitchers and the Padres six. It was unclear what the pitching situation would be when the game resumes.

Both of the Los Angeles runs were unearned. The Dodgers opened the scoring in the fourth when Casey Blake and Kemp both walked. They pulled off a double steal and Blake reached home on a throwing error by catcher Nick Hundley.

After the Padres took the lead in the fifth, Casey Blake, who singled and moved up on a passed ball, reached home on a single by Kemp, tying the score 2-2.

Orlando Hudson and Ryan Ludwick drove in the San Diego runs.

Mar 31, 2011 - When the Dodgers and Giants get together, it’s always a treat, simply because of their rivalry goes back more than a century. Add in the fact that tonight is opening day, and the game features two of the best pitchers in baseball, as the game becomes even more special. Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers will host Tim Lincecum and the Giants in an evening game at Dodger Stadium on ESPN.

Tonight’s 5 p.m. PDT game will be one of two games televised this weekend by ESPN (well, technically Sunday’s game is on ESPN2). Dan Shulman, Orel Hershiser, and Bobby Valentine are on the call. Local fans, however, don’t fear. Vin Scully will be calling at least six innings on radio, KABC 790. Scully will call the first three innings and innings seven through nine, plus any extra innings.

The Dodgers open their season with five players on the disabled list, including projected regulars Casey Blake and Jay Gibbons. Newcomer Juan Uribe, penciled in as the regular second baseman, will open the season at third base for Blake, with Jamey Carroll getting the opening day nod at second base. Ivan DeJesus is also expected to see time at second base in Blake’s absence. Tony Gwynn Jr. will get the opening day start in left field, against the right-handed Lincecum, though Xavier Paul will also play against right-handers.

Kershaw has allowed six earned runs in five career starts against the Giants, and picked up his first career complete game and shutout at AT&T Park in San Francisco last September. One of the hitters Kershaw will face will be Brandon Belt, who is making his major league debut tonight. Belt, a left-handed batter, won the Giants’ first base job out of spring, and he played against Kershaw in high school in Texas. Both graduated high school in 2006.

Matt Kemp has an active streak of homering in five straight game, tied for the longest streak in Dodgers franchise history. Andre Ethier has reached base in each of his last eight plate appearances.

The Dodgers made it official, although it probably wasn’t easy. Sands hit .364 with a .773 slugging percentage during the spring. Instead, the Dodgers will go with Jay Gibbons, Marcus Thames and Tony Gwynn Jr. in left field.

latimes.com: For now, let him develop. It would help if they felt certain which position was in his future. Outfield or first base (James Loney is 26), or do they try to groom him to take over for Casey Blake at third?

The Dodgers’ pipeline has dried up the past few years, but Sands could lead the next wave. If they just give him a little time.
