Chris Narveson struggles as Milwaukee Brewers fall…

Cleveland Indians beat Los Angeles Dodgers

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Clayton Kershaw put in a good day’s work on his 24th birthday.

The NL Cy Young Award winner pitched into the sixth inning and dropped two sacrifice bunts for the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 4-3 loss Monday to Cleveland.

Indians center fielder Michael Brantley left after one inning with what manager Manny Acta said was a “tight right hamstring.”

Kershaw allowed one run — his first this spring — and three singles in 5 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out four. The left-hander got eight outs on grounders and has a 0.73 ERA in 12 1/3 innings in three starts this spring.

“For the first two or three innings, I was pretty erratic, missing with too many fastballs,” Kershaw said. “But I battled OK.”

Indians starter Jeanmar Gomez matched the NL’s best, pitching one-hit ball for four innings in his first Cactus League start. The right-hander has yet to allow a run in 11 innings in four outings.

“Gomez set the tone,” Acta said. “Against a guy like Kershaw, you have to do that.”

Carlos Santana hit the first pitch from Dodgers reliever Javy Guerra for his second homer and a 2-0 lead. Lonnie Chisenhall added a two-run single in the eighth for Cleveland.

Kershaw was critical of his own performance.

“Physically, I feel good,” said Kershaw, who went 21-5 and led the NL with a 2.28 ERA and 248 strikeouts in 2011. “I just need to get better fastball command. I had a good change-up. My curveball was good, but my slider was flat.

“In a perfect world, you throw all four pitches fine. Until then, there is stuff to work on.”

In 2009 against Colorado, Kershaw celebrated his 21st birthday by hitting a home run.

“Not today,” he said. “I had to bunt, dadgum it.

“I’m getting old. Nah, not really. I’m still the youngest guy on the staff, experience-wise.”

Jose Lopez had an RBI single against Kershaw in the first, but also made one of Cleveland’s three errors by booting an easy grounder at third base.

“We didn’t play very good defense,” Acta said.

Gomez, competing with left-hander David Huff and right-handers Kevin Slowey and Zach McAllister for the No. 5 rotation spot, might be able to earn a roster spot if it is not as a starter.

“He has thrown the ball probably the best of anybody in camp,” Acta said. “His secondary pitches are better. He used to rely only on a two-seam fastball. His slider has been swing and miss.”

Acta has two openings in the bullpen, with a need for a long man. Gomez could fill that role and be used as an occasional starter.

“We’re taking the best 25 players to start the season. It is not about being put into a role,” Acta said.

Notes: Acta said Brantley left as a precaution, and Cleveland’s only day off of the spring today comes at a good time. … Second baseman Justin Sellers went 3 for 4 with an RBI for the Dodgers. … Indians right-hander Derek Lowe allowed three runs in five innings in a 6-5 B game win against the Chicago Cubs. First baseman Matt LaPorta and shortstop Cristian Guzman hit homers for Cleveland. McAllister allowed one earned run in four innings. Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo had a triple and two RBI. … Indians left-hander Rafael Perez and right-hander Robinson Tejeda each worked one inning in a minor league game. Perez (sore shoulder) allowed one hit and one run. Tejeda (sore calf) yielded two hits and one run.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

Dodgers Spring Training 2012: Roster Cuts, Injury…

Read More: Jerry Hairston Jr. (SS – LOS), Matt Chico (P – LOS), Matt Guerrier (P – LOS), Ryan Tucker (P – LOS), Jeff Baisley (3B – LOS), Clayton Kershaw (P – LOS), Will Savage (P – LOS), Matt Wallach (C – LOS), Lance Zawadzki (2B – LOS), Gorman Erickson (C – LOS), Los Angeles Dodgers

Minor league games began for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday, which meant several coaches switched over from the major league side of camp to the minor league side, and with that shift came a flurry of roster cuts on Sunday. Eight players were trimmed from the Dodgers roster on Sunday, leaving the club with 45 players remaining in camp.

“It just got to the point where there weren’t enough at-bats. More and more guys are wanting more innings,” manager Don Mattingly said.

Pitchers Matt Chico, Will Savage, Ryan Tucker, catchers Matt Wallach and Gorman Erickson, and infielders Jeff Baisley and Lance Zawadzki were all reassigned to minor league camp on Sunday, while pitcher Alberto Castillo was given his release.

“We didn’t see [Castillo] as that guy for us and we didn’t see him being that guy in Triple A waiting around either,” Mattingly said. “We felt it was fair to him to get him out on the wire, let people take a look and give him the best chance to be in the big leagues with somebody.”

On the field, the Dodgers tied the Angels 1-1 on Sunday in a rain-shortened game. The game was called after five and a half innings. Clayton Kershaw makes his third Cactus League start on Monday at Goodyear against the Cleveland Indians, and is scheduled to throw roughly 80-85 pitches.

Relief pitcher Matt Guerrier has been held out of workouts for about a week while nursing a back injury, but Mattingly said his right-hander is feeling better and close to a return. Guerrier will participate in dry work on Monday, throw a bullpen session on Tuesday, pitch in a minor league game on Friday, and could pitch in a major league spring game next Sunday if all goes according to plan.

Jerry Hairston Jr. was out Friday with a tight quad, and was sent home early Saturday with the flu. Hairston returned to workouts on Sunday, and is expected to play Monday in Goodyear.

Scully won't do games in Colorado

Updated Mar 18, 2012 2:22 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (AP)

Vin Scully will no longer be calling Los Angeles Dodgers games in Colorado this season as the revered announcer scales back his workload entering his 63rd season with the team.

The 84-year-old Hall of Famer will broadcast all home and road games the Dodgers play in California and Arizona, which adds up to more than 100 games, the team said Saturday in a release of its 2012 broadcast schedule.

Scully calls all nine innings of the team’s television broadcasts, while the first three innings of his games are simulcast on the radio. He works alone on the air and long ago reduced his travel schedule to avoid calling games east of the Rockies.

Scully’s years of service with the Dodgers make him the longest tenured broadcaster in sports history.

That’s all for today.

LOS ANGELES – Vin Scully is going to say adieu to Denver, and further scale back his workload with the Los Angeles Dodgers this year, it was reported today.

Los Angeles Times sportswriters analyzed the fine print on the Dodgers’ TV schedule, and reported today that Scully will no longer call games from the Mile High City.

Scully, 84, will still be behind the microphone for more than 100 Dodgers games in Phoenix, San Diego, the Bay Area, Anaheim and, of course, Dodger Stadium.

The Hall of Fame sportscaster is entering his 63rd season. Several years ago, he stopped travelling to games east of Colorado.

Scully was to arrive in Phoenix this weekend to call a couple of spring training games, weather permitting.

The forecast for the Valley of the Sun was for clouds and wind today, with rain arriving from California on Sunday.

Stow to pursue Dodgers case after sale

Updated Mar 16, 2012 9:30 PM ET

LOS ANGELES

Attorneys for San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow will not impede the sale of the Los Angeles Dodgers, agreeing Friday to recover any damages from the team’s insurance policies after the ballclub emerges from bankruptcy.

Stow, who suffered severe brain injuries in a brutal attack outside Dodger Stadium on Opening Day last season, will now pursue his case against the team in Los Angeles Superior Court, the Los Angeles Times reported.

US Bankruptcy Judge Kevin Gross said last week he wanted lawyers from both sides to settle their civil dispute without his intervention.

Embattled Dodgers owner Frank McCourt has agreed to present Gross with an agreement to sell the storied franchise by April 6, with the deal being completed by April 30, according to the Times.

Stow’s attorneys have cited a “conservative” estimate of $50 million for the lifelong medical care he will require.

The 43-year-old spent months in a coma after the March 31 beating.

The Dodgers asked Gross to dismiss the case last month, saying, “The Dodgers had no knowledge of any inappropriate conduct by Stow’s assailants prior to the time that Stow sustained his injuries.”

Prosecutors in the criminal case have said Stow was knocked unconscious then repeatedly kicked in the head during the parking lot attack. Louie Sanchez, 29, and Marvin Norwood, 31, have pleaded not guilty to charges of mayhem, assault and battery.

Not much else going on in the MLB planet today.

Loney hits 3-run homer, Dodgers beat Texas 5-2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly figures his batting order on opening day will look a lot like what he tried Friday. He hopes the result will be familiar, too.

The Dodgers started their expected lineup for the first time in spring training and beat the Texas Rangers 5-2 in a game that included a three-run homer by James Loney and a fielding gem by the first baseman.

”That’s pretty much it,” Mattingly said. ”That’s kind of what I’m looking at right now.”

Most of it had to look good, especially Loney, who had been troubled by tightness in his calf. Any worries about that lingering injury were gone in the first inning when Loney made a diving snag of a hard grounder by Brad Hawpe.

The next inning, batting sixth, hit a 2-0 pitch from Greg Reynolds over the Rangers’ bullpen in right field and on to an elevated walkway at Camelback Ranch. The towering shot, his first homer this spring, scored Andre Ethier, who doubled, and Juan Rivera, who walked.

Loney did not play in games Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

”James knew exactly what he needed,” Mattingly said. ”He needed a couple of days off.”

In the third, Ethier, batting fourth, hit a sacrifice fly to deep center. In the sixth, the Dodgers got an RBI single from Juan Uribe.

Dodgers starter Ted Lilly threw four scoreless innings, allowing one hit without a walk. He retired his last 11 batters.

”Not bad,” said Lilly, who was critical of his performance despite the numbers. ”It was OK. The results probably were a little better than I pitched. But it’s always nice when you get away with mistakes.”

Dodgers reliever Kenley Jansen didn’t get away with anything. He gave up back-to-back home runs in the fifth to Brandon Snyder and Luis Martinez.

”I’ve never given up two home runs in one inning. Never. It was kind of a funny feeling. I’m thinking, ‘What did I do? Hey, they just got me,”’ he said.

NOTES: Dodgers reliever Matt Guerrier is still slowed by a strained muscle in his lower back. He threw Friday, but not off the mound. Mattingly said Guerrier’s work will continue to be limited. ”For a few more days,” Mattingly said. ”We don’t want this to linger.” .The Dodgers play Colorado Saturday in Scottsdale. Right-hander Nathan Eovaldi is scheduled to start for Los Angeles. The Rockies plan to counter with right-hander Jeremy Guthrie. .The Rangers play split-squad games Saturday against the Cubs in Las Vegas and at home in Surprise, Ariz., against the Diamondbacks. Texas LHP Derek Holland is scheduled to start in Las Vegas against the Cubs and Rangers RHP Scott Feldman is the scheduled starter in Surprise against the Diamondbacks.

Baseball: Los Angeles Dodgers counting on Mark…

New arrival Mark Ellis is slated to be the Los Angeles Dodgers’ regular second baseman this year and bat second in the lineup, even though there are questions about how much production he’ll provide at the plate.

“I’ve had some good years (batting), had some bad years, and I take a lot of pride in my offense,” Ellis said. “I know what I can bring to the team offensively.”

Considered among the game’s best-fielding second basemen, Ellis, 34, last year hit .248 with seven home runs and 41 RBIs in over 132 games with the A’s — where he spent most of his career — and with the Colorado Rockies in the latter half of the season.

“People need to look past one year or whatever and look at the whole combination,”

said Ellis, who signed a two-year, $8.75 million contract with the Dodgers. “I’m just going to be me, and hopefully that’s something they like.”

Rangers: Newcomer Yu Darvish was unable to command his lively fastball, but he delivered devastating breaking balls to work out of trouble during the first three innings of Texas’ 8-8 tie with Cleveland in 10 innings.

Darvish walked four and allowed two runs and three hits. He limited the damage by getting Shin-Soo Choo to ground into a double play. Catcher Yorvit Torrealba helped by throwing out two Indians attempting steals.

“If Torrealba is not catching, I think I’d give up 10 runs today,” Darvish said through interpreter Joe Furukawa. “Some

of my pitches were so bad, I don’t think any hitters would swing at them.”

Astros: Livan Hernandez pitched five shutout innings in Houston’s 6-5 victory over Philadelphia. Hernandez, 37, is trying to win a spot in the Astros’ rotation.

“I threw the ball down, had a good sinker today. Everything’s going the way I want it,” Hernandez said. “My curveball was breaking pretty good, too. The arm is feeling very fresh and very good right now.”

The Los Angeles Times and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Rivera, Dodgers tag Weaver, beat Angels 9-1

TEMPE, Ariz. —

Los Angeles Angels ace Jered Weaver had a lot of trouble locating his pitches. The Los Angeles Dodgers’ hitters had no problem finding them.

Juan Rivera hit his second homer of the spring and Justin Sellers also connected as the Dodgers chased Weaver in a 9-1 romp Monday.

Rivera, who formerly played for the Angels, drove in four runs. His two-run double off Weaver highlighted a three-run first inning.

Weaver, expected to start on opening day, gave up three runs on four hits and two walks in his second spring start. He walked two batters in the first.

“I’m really not worried about results, to be honest with you,” Weaver said. “I wasn’t really hitting my spots early on.”

Weaver went 18-8 with a 2.41 ERA last season. He worked two scoreless innings in his first spring start against Seattle.

“He was pitching from behind on the count,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “But it’s early in the spring.”

Dodgers right-hander Aaron Harang made his second spring start and worked three innings, giving up one run and three hits. He went 14-7 with a 3.67 ERA with San Diego last season.

NOTES: Scioscia said he expects both Mike Trout and Kendrys Morales to take part in spring training games soon. Morales has been doing drills that included running from first to third base, and could open in the team’s minor league games at Tempe this week. Trout has been slowed by the flu since early in camp and lost 10 pounds. Scioscia said Trout has gotten most of his weight back and would likely be in a game by Monday. … Angels third baseman Mark Trumbo made his first error, bobbling a routine grounder by Matt Kemp in the second inning. “He’s got to get comfortable with a lot of different plays out there,” Scioscia said. “He’ll get better.” Trumbo is a natural first baseman but had to move after the Angels signed Albert Pujols.
